Ted Stamatelos

Ted Stamatelos was born June 09, 1944, in Manhattan, New York to Deana Picoulas and Nicholas Stamatelos. Raised in a large Greek family, Ted had fond memories of growing up on 17th Street and spending time with his yia yia and papou. The whole family would gather together in a small tenement apartment for holiday celebrations, yet, no matter how austere the surroundings, Ted would recall these stories with the greatest of reverence.

While attending the High School of Music & Art Ted became immersed in the studies of painting and psychology. As an adult he merged these interests into a career as an art therapist. He worked with developmentally disabled children and adults for over 50 years in both North Carolina and New York. He spent the last 30 years of his life working with Plus Group Homes in Uniondale where he was a well respected and beloved colleague. 

A lifelong painter, Ted’s work spanned over six decades. He never stopped searching for new ways to express his art, and continued painting into his final days. Some recurring themes in his work are mythology, geology, dreams, the cosmos, and cataclysm. He was also a committed member of the Patchogue Arts Council, as well as a loving friend of the Acampora Recreation Center.

Mentoring many throughout his life, he believed in his students’ ability to create meaning not only on the canvas, but also in their lives. He loved to share his knowledge and introduce people to new music, film, literature, and ideas. 

Ted spent more than 30 years in Blue Point, NY. He is survived by his sister Ronny, and his nephews Stephen and Matthew.
