Susan Bartunek

Susan Bartunek; age 97, longtime resident of Sayville, LI., passed peacefully on Wednesday, September 19, surrounded by her family.

Susan is survived by her children, Diana Gieckel (John Caraccio), Robert (Hiroko Bowman), her grandsons, Adam Gieckel, Daniel Gieckel, her beloved caregiver, Irma Kovziridze, her sister, Catherine Ivers. She was predeceased by her husband William in 1961, her sister Gloria Isaacson in 2012 and brother Matthew (Marty) Merolla in 2019.

Susan was a devout catholic, had a quick wit, and was a selfless person who enjoyed her huge vegetable garden, fruit trees, baking and sharing the bounty with her beloved family and friends. She was a fixture at the Charlotte Shop in Sayville where she worked along with her sister Gloria for over twenty-five years. Customers always asked for her expert assistance.  

In her later years she enjoyed traveling, watching movies starring Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, listening to their music and that of Andrea Bocelli and got a kick out of Willie Nelson!

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 23rd 9:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence RC Church. Interment to follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery, Sayville.
