Ruth Adeline Smith, a resident of West Sayville, passed away at the age of 103. Ruth grew up in Sayville and was a graduate of Sayville High School. After her marriage to Walter Smith, she moved to West Sayville. She worked as a laundry worker for Pilgrim State Psychiatric Hospital for many years. She was a lifetime, and the oldest, member of the Sayville Congregational Church where she was active in the Women’s Fellowship. Ruth also belonged to the Senior Citizens’ group in Sayville and was a volunteer at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
Ruth enjoyed gardening, yard sailing and playing games. Her favorite was Scrabble which she continued to play until her passing.
Ruth was loving and kind and was always there to help anyone in need. She loved being with her family and having her grandchildren stay with her on weekends.
She is survived by her children Everett, and his wife Mary, Pauline Scharpf; her grandchildren Jeffrey, Kristin, Debra, Eric, Michael and Steven; her great-grandchildren Cory, Timothy, Hallie, Chiara, Casey, Luca, Toby, Matthew, Ryan, and Noah; and her great-great-grandchild Natalie. Ruth is predeceased by her husband Walter and her son-in-law Walter Scharpf.
