Robert J. Anziano Sr., affectionately known as Bob, passed away on August 26, 2025, at the age of 100. Born on May 13, 1925, in Jamaica Queens. He was the son of James and Philomena Anziano. He was the youngest of eight children.
Bob was the devoted husband of the late Barbara whom he married in 1947 and together they built a beautiful life rooted in love and family. He was the proud father of Thomas (Sharon), Kathi Cullinane (Charles), and was predeceased by his sons Robert and James. Loving father-in-law to Jean & Joan. He was a beloved grandfather to Robert, Thomas, Timothy, Kristi, Kenneth, Daniel, Allison, and Brian, he also was a doting Great grandfather to 12. He also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.
Bob was a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School. Bob was a standout on the baseball team. At 18 he entered the US Navy during World War II, serving as an Airplane Instrument Technician. He was the last of seven brothers to join the war effort. While stationed with the Navy, Bob played baseball with fellow serviceman, including professional players, such as Johnny Pesky of the Boston Red Sox, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship.
After the war, Bob used his G.I. bill to attend NYU, to become a Phys-Ed and science teacher. He later earned his administrative license from Hofstra University. His teaching career began in Baltimore, but in 1953 he returned to New York and join the Island Trees School District, before settling into a long career in the Bethpage School District. From 1956 until his retirement in 1990. Bob served as a teacher, coach, coordinator of physical education, and health at the John F. Kennedy junior high school. He also served as an assistant principal and ultimately as district Athletic Director… A role he deeply loved. He coached baseball, football and wrestling and he spent 25 years refereeing high school wrestling across Nassau County.
Bob’s life was also marked by service to his Faith. In a 1960, he and Barbara joined St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Farmingdale, where he became an active member. He served as an usher and was on the church council for many years. He also served on many committees through the years.
One of Bob’s fondest memories was at 15 when he was a caddy for the legendary Babe Ruth, who was a close friend of his older brother Eddie. They used to play together at the Saint Albans Golf Club. Later in life, Bob and Barbara enjoyed traveling together, spending winters in Florida, and gathering with family. He especially loved cheering on his grandchildren in their various sports and activities. He also was an avid Mets fan.
In 2020, Bob moved permanently to Florida to be near his daughter. In May 2025, he joyfully celebrated his hundredth birthday, surrounded by family and friends from across the country.
Bob lived a life defined by service, friendship, family, and a love for sports. He will be remembered for his steady presence, his dedication to education, and athletics, and above all the love he gave to his family.
A committal service will be held at Calverton National Cemetery on September 8, 2025 at 10:30 a.m.
