Otto R. Brauner, beloved husband, father, "Pop," and friend, passed away on June 20, 2025, at the age of 87. Born in Patchogue on August 22, 1937, Otto lived a life marked by kindness, laughter, and an unwavering dedication to helping others.
He began his service early by joining the Patchogue Fire Department and later moved to Bayport, where he proudly served in the Bayport Fire Department for an incredible 59 years. He also served his country with honor in the United States and the Army National Guard.
Otto had a gift for storytelling and a heart for service—always leaving people and animals better than he found them. His sense of humor, generosity, and willingness to help in any way were hallmarks of his character.
Family meant everything to Otto, and his deep bond with his grandchildren will remain a lasting legacy. A former football player at SUNY Cortland and the University of Bridgeport, he stayed active throughout his life, enjoying golf, kayaking, pickleball, and dancing with his wife, Ellie, well into his later years. He also found joy in playing the organ and accordion and had a special love for oompah music.
He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 65 years, Ellie; his daughter, Barbara Niblock, and her husband, Tom; and his cherished grandchildren, Timothy and Alexis. He was predeceased by his son, Otto F. Brauner (2019), his sister, Bettie Ann Saidler (2020), and his parents, Gladys R. (Weeks) and Otto F. Brauner.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bayport Fire Department’s Racing Pavilion on Sunday, July 13th, from 4–7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers or donations, honor Otto’s legacy by helping someone who can offer you nothing in return. That’s what he did—every day.
