Morton Mihlstin Obituary

Morton A. Mihlstin

1932-2022

Morton Mihlstin, 89, passed away peacefully in Bay Shore, NY on January 4, 2022, after a brief illness. Mort was born February 18, 1932, to Leo and Belle Mihlstin in Brooklyn, NY. He is survived by his beautiful bride, Harriet, to whom he was married for nearly 60 glorious years; his devoted sons, Steven (Laura) and Adam (Marilyn); cherished grandchildren, Rachel, Ethan and Brooke; and beloved brother, Frank (Annette).

Mort attended Clemson University, where he graduated from the textile program, was senior class president of Hillel, and served in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

Mort was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mort and Harriet married April 15, 1962, and raised their family in Baldwin, NY and Bayport, NY. Mort spent his life-time career in the garment industry with Belding Hausman in New York City. He commuted on the Long Island Railroad for 40 years, 2 ½ hours each direction, always enjoying the company of his buddies and the friendly small-stakes card games. Mort retired in 1997 and spent his later years working part-time at Steven’s accounting firm.

In addition to Mort’s natural ability to nurture professional and personal relationships, he loved traveling and entertaining with Harriet, playing golf, reading, swimming, sailing and having breakfast with the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out). Mort was a gentleman who adored his family and friends, always had a kind word, offered engaging conversation, came up with endearing nicknames for his loved ones, and was quick to lend a helping hand.

Graveside services with military honors will be held Friday, January 7, at Beth David Cemetery, Elmont, NY. Donations in Mort’s memory are suggested to the National Veterans Foundation (nvf.org) or Jewish War Veterans of the USA (jwv.org).

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
