Michael Iversen Obituary

Michael Peter Iversen

Michael grew up in Queens, NY before moving to Copiague with his family in 1953. He enjoyed boating and fishing on the Bay with his parents Alfred and Josephine, and siblings Linda and Al. It was also in Copiague where Michael met his lifelong friend, Peter. Michael excelled in sports in childhood and through adolescence, starring on Copiague High School's football and basketball teams. He was the Junior Class President before graduating in 1964.

After High School, Michael worked initially in freight on the Long Island Rail Road before being drafted into the United States Army in 1965. After serving for two years, including service in Vietnam, he was honorably discharged and returned home to Long Island.
Michael resumed employment with the LIRR and became a conductor in 1971. While on his ticket-collecting rounds, he met a daily commuter named Lucille, whom he married in 1972. Michael and Lucille bought their first home in Sayville shortly after, establishing friendships with neighbors and the local community. They raised two boys in this home, Michael and Paul, before moving to Blue Point in 1989.

Michael's last ride as a conductor came in 1998, retiring atop the seniority list for all LIRR conductors.  In this new stage of life he enjoyed cruises and vacations with his wife and family. He was fortunate to also spend time with his railroad retirees on the golf course, playing pinochle, and attending luncheons.

Michael will be remembered as an engaging man with charm and quick wit, an enthusiastic gardener with the best tomatoes on the block, a fan of baseball and Bond movies, an admirer of classic cars and Doo-wop music, a protector of his younger brother and sister, and as a loving and stable provider for his wife and children.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
