Mary Humphreys Sumbler, 92, passed away peacefully on November 25th, 2022. She was surrounded by her family at the time of death. She is survived by her brother Anthony Humphreys, her daughter Jeannine Seymour, her son-in-law Michael Seymour, and her granddaughters Emily and Sophia Seymour.
Mary was born on September 18, 1930 in her home in Brooklyn, New York to Michael and Rose Humphreys. After graduating from Fontbonne Academy, she attended college at Notre Dame in Staten Island and received her masters degree in Education at New York University. Mary taught reading for 50 years, 30 of which at Great Neck Public Schools. Teaching was her passion in life and she found great joy in teaching her students how to read.
Mary had a passion for traveling and visited many countries around the world. When Mary was in her early twenties she taught English in Italy for a year. She also visited Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Russia, Ireland, France in her lifetime. Mary had a zest for life and lived every day to the fullest.
Mary was a strong-willed, generous, loving woman that touched so many lives. She showed us the real meaning of strength and bravery and how to treat everyone with compassion and respect. Mary will be greatly missed but she lives on forever in our hearts.
Visitation- Thursday December 1, 2022 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at our Bayport Funeral Home, 683 Montauk Hwy.
Funeral Mass- Friday December 2, 2022 at 9:45 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snow RC Church, Blue Point
Interment- St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale
