Martin J. Monahan, 97, a long time resident of Brookhaven Hamlet before moving to Oakdale, N.Y., died on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. Martin was born in The Bronx, N.Y. He shared many stories of his childhood growing up with fond memories – from hitching rides on trolley cars to the joy of having and raising pigeons on the roof of his grandfather’s moving & storage business.
Mr. Monahan was a WW2 veteran. He served as a sergeant in the South Pacific theater. He was a high school history at Centereach High School for many years – a career he loved and never thought of as a job.
Martin had many interests as he loved to think in his workshop that contained a milling machine, welders and drill press to name just a few. It seemed to us that he could fix anything, which he passed on to his boys. Often he would make a new part to fix a machine rather than ordering a new one. He loved sailing on the Great South Bay and was an avid reader. He always had a hearty “Hello, ello!” for all and was a wonderful, engaging listener.
Mr. Monahan is survived by his four children, Martin and his wife Debi, Melissa and her husband Thomas Scheibel, Steven and his wife Jessica and Timothy and his wife Anne-Marie, as well as his thirteen grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son John in 2020. He loved and was loved by his family and will be deeply missed.
