Liliane Steffen Obituary

Liliane Steffen, beloved wife to her late husband of 59 years, Andre; mother to 3 children: Andy (wife Terri), Claude (fiancée Marilyn) and Diane (husband Ed); and grandmother to Luc, Ryan, TJ and Bill, passed away in Holbrook, NY on March 26, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, resilience, and unwavering devotion to her loved ones. Born and raised in Alsace (Reichshoffen), she was the only child of Raymond and Louise Florentin. Though she was initially expected to learn skills like sewing to prepare for marriage, rather than work in her father’s furniture shop or the family restaurant, Liliane grew into an independent, hardworking, and determined woman, defying expectations with strength and perseverance.

Liliane received her education at a boarding school run by nuns before continuing her studies at the Collège de Jeunes Filles in Barr. She was always proud of her academic achievements and carried a lifelong appreciation for learning. Her early years in France were filled with cherished moments surrounded by her grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins, all of whom lived nearby. However, World War II cast a long shadow over her childhood. During this period, she would find herself frequently forced to seek shelter as bombs were dropped from above. Food was often scarce throughout the region, and this instilled in her an incredible resourcefulness, allowing her to craft a meal like no other out of what others might consider an empty refrigerator—a skill she carried with her throughout her life.

After the war, Liliane’s parents sent her to the United States for a year to improve her English language skills. It was there that she met her lifelong partner and eventual husband, André. They married in Alsace, France before returning to the US in 1955 to begin their life together.

Liliane and André became well-known as the owners of "André's Lake House" in Sayville, New York. They ran the restaurant for well over 20 years. It was here that Liliane wore many hats—hostess, accountant, bartender, and assistant in the kitchen—always ensuring that her guests felt at home with high quality food and a welcoming atmosphere. She formed lasting friendships with many of her staff and customers, remaining in touch long after retiring.

One of Liliane’s greatest joys was gathering with friends over a good meal and a glass of wine, whether in Long Island or Palm Beach. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her grandchildren, playing board games such as Rummikub (which she would consistently win), having long phone conversations, and maintaining the deep bond they shared.

Liliane leaves behind a vast network of family and friends in both the United States and France, all of whom will deeply miss her kindness, strength, and generous spirit.
