Joseph Mahoney, 88, a resident of Sayville, NY since 1969, died on Sunday, July 6, 2025. Born and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Joseph served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He worked for many years as an Air Traffic Controller on Long Island and was a founding member of the Professional Air Traffic Controller Organization. He later worked in telecommunications with Suffolk County.
Locally, Mr. Mahoney was very active. He was a longtime volunteer and one-time Treasurer with Sayville Little League, a referee with the Great South Bay Football League, a longtime member of St. Lawrence RC Church where he was a member and former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and a longtime member of the American Legion in Sayville.
Mr. Mahoney is survived by his wife, Eileen, his children, Joseph of Patchogue, Brian of Blue Point and Annette Cross and her husband David of Coram, his grandchildren, James, Liam, Sean, Malachy, Chelsea, Cash, Darin, Serena, Bridget and Anya, two great-granddaughters, Marin and Sophia, as well as his sister, Mary Mayne of Florida. He was predeceased by his son James in 2014.
Friends and relatives will gather on Thursday, July 10th, 2-4:30 & 7-9:30 p.m. at Raynor & D’Andrea Funeral Home in Bayport. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 11th at 10 a.m. at St. Lawrence RC Church in Sayville and interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
