John E McDonald, 93, longtime resident of Bayport, passed away on March 22. Born on February 7th, 1927 in Brooklyn, Mr. McDonald served in the Merchant Marine and Army during World War II. He worked as a letter carrier for 29 years, the last 16 at the Sayville post office before retiring in 1988. He loved reading books on a vast array of subjects, classical music, visits to NYC and taking long walks in local parks. He was known for being a true gentleman, his sense of humor and as a great storyteller with his melodious speaking voice.
He is survived by his sons; Sean, Jerry, Edmond and his wife Jennifer, and his two grandchildren Jack and Meghan. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife Eleanor and his parents John P. and Margaret McDonald.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Raynor and D’Andrea Funeral Homes in West Sayville. A funeral mass will be held on September 4th at 9:45 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snow R.C. Church in Blue Point. His interment was at the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Sayville. Donations can be made in his name to the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook.
