James P. Dunn, Jr, 89, of Bay Shore, formerly of Great River, New York, died on Sunday, August 17, 2025, surrounded by his family. Raised in East Islip, James graduated from East Islip High School before going on to earn his Associate’s Degree at Farmingdale College and his Master’s Degree at Columbia University. He served in the US Navy Reserves for eight years. Mr. Dunn founded Aerospace Avionics, along with his brother-in-law, Russell Kittel, where he served as President and CEO for many years before retiring in 1988.
Mr. Dunn was a fifty-year member and Past President at Southward Ho Country Club in Brightwaters. He was also Past President and longtime board member at Good Samaritan Hospital and was instrumental in founding the Long Island Philharmonic, along with several local businessmen, including the late, Harry Chapin. Mr. Dunn loved his family, golf and Italian wine and food.
Mr. Dunn is survived by his wife, Lucille, his five children, James III and his wife Lenore, Michael and his wife Danielle, Tracy Mullaney and her husband Kevin, Dr. Kevin and his wife Sarah and Bridget Baker, his thirteen grandchildren, Emily, Colin, Liam, Madeline, Max, Ian, Lukas, Maggie, Charlotte, Caroline, Teddy, Teagan and Dylan, as well as his sister, Kathleen Stern and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Kyran and by an infant son, Patrick.
Friends and relatives will gather on Friday, August 22nd, 3-7 p.m. at Raynor & D’Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 23rd at 10:15 a.m. at St. Mary’s RC Church in East Islip and a private cremation will follow.
