James G. Cunningham, age 94, resident of Sayville, LI., died on December 19th, 2024.
Jim was a devoted family man, deeply proud of them all, he never missed a game. He loved the outdoors; besides golf and tennis he loved camping, being on the boat and fishing at the beach.
Jim was a two sport athlete at Iona College playing baseball and basketball. He spent one year in Kentucky playing minor league baseball for the Madisonville Miners prior to entering the service.
Jim was a proud veteran. He served in the US Army. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean War, while playing football for the Camp Drake Bulldogs. He was a 34 year veteran of the NYPD attaining the rank of Detective Sergeant. He received the Departments Medal of Valor in 1957.
Jim loved to take photographs and has a photo history of his life as well as taking wonderful family photos over the years. He played the banjo and always brought it out to strum at family parties and around the campfire .
James’ wife Rosemary passed in June of 2023, they were married for 68 years and his family knows how happy he is to be reunited with the love of his life. He is survived by his children, Cathleen McKillop and her husband Robert, James and his wife Catherine, Gerard and his wife Lori, Mary Fay and her husband Thomas, Daniel and his wife Debora, his grandchildren, Kerrin, Matthew, Brendan, James, Sean, Conor, Brian, Shannon, Gerard, Ryan, Kyle, Daniel, Kevin, Patrick and twelve great grandchildren.
Visitation- Sunday December 22, 2024 from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at our West Sayville Funeral Home, 245 Main St.
Funeral Mass- Monday December 23, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Nepomucene RC Church, Bohemia
Interment- Calverton National Cemetery
