Helen Kochnower Obituary

Helen Kochnower (nee Gross), beloved wife of the late William Kochnower, was born in Manhattan on January 12th, 1924 to Esther & Paul Gross. She grew up in the Bronx with her younger brother Sam, and developed her passions for poetry, sketching and learning, with her favorite subjects being history & literature.

After meeting William in 1945, they shared a love of music, laughter & learning and knew right away they were meant to be. They got unofficially engaged on their third date, and went on to spend a wonderful 70 years together.

Helen worked as a Secretary for the US Army during the first world war, and also for Deca Records, where she got to watch Bing Crosby record. After marrying William, they moved out to Jericho on Long Island to start their family. While raising three children, Helen went back to school to continue her education & became a teacher in her forties. She went on to teach third and fourth grade in Syosset for twenty years, becoming an advocate for continuing education throughout her life.

Helen and William also shared a love for travel, and visited numerous countries in their years together, learning as much about the languages and culture as they could. After retirement, they moved to Holbrook and bought a second home in Delray Beach, Florida where they would spend their winters playing golf and keeping up with their full social life.

Above all, the most important thing in Helen’s 100 year life was her family. She is survived by her children Jeffrey and Janet Dougherty,  grandchildren Lisa (Jason), David, Karen, Michael, and Nicole; and great-grandchildren Caitlyn, Sam, and Jax, who will remember her for her passion for learning, culture and most of all, the importance of family. “
