Harry was born on April 7, 1938 to Sidney and Catherine Higbie. The first of 5 children; he grew up in Bellmore, playing, fishing, and trapping on the shores of the Great South Bay. After graduating from Mepham High School in 1956, he served in the Navy for 4 years on the USS Barry. He then returned to Bellmore and followed in his father’s footsteps by working for Grumman Aerospace as an electronics engineer. In 1972, he married Barbara Carroll, the girl one house down, and had their first daughter Michelle two years later. When the second daughter, Deborah, was born, they bought a house in Oakdale and soon had their third daughter Jennifer. While raising their family, he became extremely active in the Sayville United Methodist Church for many years serving on several committees and being a trustee. In 1995, he retired from Grumman and continued to build and fix computer systems. He became passionate about his family history and genealogy while continuing to travel and enjoy life. After loosing his wife, he became heavily involved in the West Islip Historical Society and the fight to preserve the La Grange Inn. Harry leaves behind a legacy of service and friendship to all those who knew him.
