Emily Travers Obituary

Emily Rose Travers passed away peacefully on the first day of Spring March 20, 2021 at the age of 94. Emily was a long time resident of Blue Point for 70 years. She graduated with honors from Vincentian Institute High School in Albany, NY in 1944 and wanted to pursue a career in journalism.  She started to work at the Knickerbocker News as a copy girl. In September of 1944 she joined the Cadet Nurse Corp. funded by the government for the training of nurses during World War II at the College of St. Rose in Albany.  Her training took her to different hospitals around the state. She did her psych training on Long Island at Central Islip Psychiatric Center in 1946 and met the man of her dreams Jerry Travers. They were married October 26, 1946.

In August of 1949 they moved to their newly built home on Pheasant Way in Blue Point. They raised five children Carolyn (Bill), Michael (Judy/deceased), Jim (Cherry / deceased), Kathy (Ken) and Ed. She is  “grandma” to Damian, Tara (Cory), Kerry (Chris), Sean (April), Christopher (Bailey), Michelle(Nick), Tim, Casey and Carly and “Great-Grandma” to Abigail, Charlotte, Kellen, Jessica, Ethan, Gavin, Sean, Jr., Nicholas, Mia, Brantley,  Meghan, Lyla and Eliot.

Emily was a multi-talented lady. The original Martha Stewart if you will, and more, because of her musical talents. She gave pianos lessons over the years to hundreds of students and played masses, weddings and funerals at Our Lady of the Snow Catholic Church in Blue Point. Emily loved tending to her gardens, crafting, sewing including wedding gowns and wedding party dresses for her daughters and granddaughters. She loved the beach and playing tennis. At 75 years old she traveled to compete in a USTA National Tennis Tournament in Palm Springs. She loved being involved in her children’s interests. She was a Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout den mother, the first lady president of The Blue Point Little League and a loving caretaker to many pets over the years.

She was predeceased by her parents, Albany Police Captain Michael A. Thauer and mother Emeline Thauer, her brother Charles J. Dooley and husband Jerome E. Travers.

In lieu of flowers, her favorite charities were Hope House Ministries of Port Jefferson at hhm.org and Long Island Cares/The Harry Chapin Food Bank at licares.org.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
