Edward J. Richards, a Sayville resident for over 50 years as well as a seasonal resident in Naples, Florida, passed away on May 9, 2026. Edward was a member of St. Lawrence the Martyr Church in Sayville where he served as a eucharistic minister and usher for Sunday and Holiday mass services for years. Edward was retired from the Nassau County Police Department after over a 30+ year career. He was a long-time member and a past president of the Nassau County Police Holy Name Society, where he would be well known to open his home every year a couple of days prior to both Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day holidays for decades for the NCPD Holy Name Society police members and volunteers to come together at his home in Sayville to put together many full holiday meal food baskets for families in need and ed would make an army size pot of his famous soups each time for those that came to help. Feel good moments for all those giving as well as the families receiving. Edward also dressed up every year as Santa Claus during the holidays bringing gifts and joyous moments for children with down syndrome as well as making the rounds to his own family members, neighbors and friends homes every year. He was also a member with the Police Emerald Society with NCPD. Edward also volunteered at Connetquot State Park in Bohemia, New York.
He is survived by his wife Judith of sixty years, his daughter Kim, and his granddaughter Crystal. He is predeceased by his son Matthew.
