Edward George Koenig, 81, of Sayville NY, passed away on November 19, 2022 after battling multiple medical issues, including cancer and recent reoccurring pneumonia.
Edward was born on April 6, 1941, to George and Irma Ruopp Koenig in Queens, NY. After graduating from high school, Ed attended SUNY Fredonia and graduated in 1963 with a teaching degree. He worked for and retired from Brentwood School Districts as an elementary teacher.
Edward met his wife, Shirley, at Fredonia college, as she was an elementary education student as well. They married within months after graduation, on August 24, 1963. They went on to have three children.
Edward was a devoted husband and father, working several side jobs to support his family and volunteering his time coaching little league.
Following his retirement, Edward enjoyed spending time with his wife, his several pet dogs over the years, visiting his children and grandchildren, and meeting new people. He would spend hours each day walking, making new acquaintances, particularly those with dogs.
Edwards wife, Shirley, suffered a severe stroke in 2022, requiring skilled care at a nursing home. Ed devoted his remaining days to her, visiting her everyday, twice a day, for hours on end. He would take her to a nearby park where he would continue to meet new people and hand out biscuits to dogs that were being walked.
Edward is survived by his wife, Shirley Koenig, his children Michael Koenig, Kindra Koenig Block and Eric Koenig, his grandchildren Myranda Block, Elijah Block and Luke Koenig, his sister Karen Roberts as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.
