Edith "Big Ede" Hotis

Edith “Big Ede” Hotis was a one-of-kind wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend like no other could be. Edith’s vibrant spirit didn’t come to an end with her death. Ede passed away on January 8, 2022 at the age of 86, in her home surrounded by her two favorite things: laughter and family, who will continue to celebrate her legacy by living their lives with a sense of humor. 

She was born to Charles and Ida “Edith” Kircher on September 1st, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York, one of ten children. Ede grew up in Baldwin, New York, where she would meet her husband, Peter Hotis. Together, they had 6 children. Ede loved her dogs (sometimes more than her children!) and spending time in the kitchen & garden, creating endless memories for her family. Her house was the neighborhood gathering place, filled with laughter and good memories. She was fond of saying a phrase her family has coined an “Ede-ism”: “life is no dress rehearsal…” You may read this and recall a memory from her that touched your heart or tickled your funny bone and that is how she wished to be remembered. Ede was sunshine for all that met her—loved, missed, and forever cherished.

Ede is survived by 5 children and their spouses, Peter and Tracey Hotis, Stephen and Jodi Hotis, Christine and William Dickson, Pamela Hotis, and John and Shari Hotis; her son-in-law Chris Alteri; and 12 grandchildren, Courtney Hotis, Ariana Dickson, Zachary Hotis, Wyatt Hotis, Dylan Hotis, Jake Dickson, Daphne Hotis, Ryan Hotis, Trevor Hotis, Aidan Dickson, Mason Hotis, and Hunter Hotis. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Hotis and daughter, Valerie Hotis.
