Edith Martha Birk, 99, of West Sayville, New York, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026, surrounded by those who loved her deeply. Born on October 21, 1926, in Silesia, Germany, Edith lived a remarkable life that spanned nearly a century of history, change, and experiences. Those early years were full of determination and hope, qualities that defined Edith throughout her life.
Edith married the love of her life, Jaan Birk, on December 31, 1953. Together they built a beautiful legacy, marked by courage, resilience and devotion to family. After her husband, Jaan established residency in America, Edith joined him in May of 1955 beginning a new chapter filled with opportunity and hope. This bold step would shape the life that they created for their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Edith’s heart belonged to her family. She cherished her family above all else, always finding pride and joy in her children and grandchildren. Her life was defined by simple pleasures – she loved sitting in the sunshine, listening to music, reading and tending to her plants. With her green thumb she could revive even the most withered plant back to full bloom. She was a devoted mother, and her kitchen was always a place of comfort and love. She effortlessly turned the simplest of ingredients into something special! Friends and family will forever remember her stories, told with wit and affection reflecting a life rich in experience, wisdom and love.
Edith is survived by her children Arvo Birk and his wife Jean, Raymond Birk and his wife Kristine, Elizabeth Seibert and her husband John, Anita Birk, Haley Lynch and her husband John, her grandchildren, Lance, Crystal, Inge, Sarah, Matthew, Sean, Courtney, Rachel, Madeline, Allie, Jack and her great grandchildren, Madison, Noel and Noah. She was also preceded in death by her beloved son, Aldur Birk.
