Donald G. Lang, of Sayville N.Y. passed away on February 23, 2021 at the age of 79 after bravely facing ALS with unwavering faith. His devotion to the community and wonderful sense of humor was a gift to all he met, and he will be missed by so many. Donald was awarded the designation of Master Gardener by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County and shared his talent for creating unique focal point gardens. A Dahlia Society member, he could be found contributing at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. Donald collaborated in designing and implementing the Common Ground project in Sayville. He helped others to realize their dream gardens and diligently tended to his own property, oftentimes digging, planting, and maintaining well into the evenings and in the last possible moments before attending an event. Donald was an accomplished Pen and Ink artist who donated his works for charitable fundraising. It wasn't unusual for friends, family, and caregivers to leave his home with a print. Through his involvement with Splashes of Hope, Donald’s artistic legacy made an impression on the walls of the Stony Brook Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Medical Center and in the minds of children.
He was the beloved husband of Marybeth (Lewis) loving father of Stephanie and Matthew (Carol) and cherished grandfather of James, John, and David. A proud U.S. Army Veteran and retired Town of Islip Purchasing Director, he held a BBA in Management, a Masters in Economics, and was an Associate real estate broker at Douglas Elliman.
Donations may be made in his memory to the ALS, Greater New York Chapter, 42 Broadway, Suite 1724, New York, NY 10004, www.als-ny.org
