Charles Piffard Obituary

Charles Haight Piffard of Sayville, NY was born May 20, 1946, in Bay Shore, NY. The son of Charles H. Piffard and Helen Carey Piffard, he grew up in Babylon and went to St Joseph’s School and Babylon Public Schools, before switching to Florida Central Academy in Mt. Dora, FL, where he was president of his class.  He attended Arkansas State University, and then studied Hotel Management, in Washington, DC.

After managing several hotels on the East Coast, he settled in Sayville with his family and purchased the Village Fish Market in West Sayville, in 1976.  As a beloved member of the West Sayville community, he succeeded in the retail fish trade for over 30 years. For many years he was active with the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce, as one of the founding organizers of the Summerfest event.  Running the first Seafood Festivals in the 1990’s to support the LI Maritime Museum, he contributed greatly to the preservation of the South Shore’s maritime heritage.  He then worked for the Suffolk County Parks Dept., where he made many more friends.

Charlie especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and outdoor pursuits on local waterways and upstate fields.  He raised chickens, ducks and rabbits at home.  He was active in fishing and sportsmen’s clubs on Long Island.

A man of deep and unshakeable faith, Charlie was a faithful member of St. Lawrence the Martyr parish, joyfully participating with the Family of God charismatic prayer group, and was commissioned as a Eucharistic Minister.

Charlie’s greatest joy was his family.  He leaves his much-loved wife; Aileen (Peg), precious daughters; Denise Piffard and Pamela Piffard-Williams (Corey), and 2 treasured grandsons; Charlie Williams and Andrew Piffard.  His sister; Lynda Bucter of Naples, FL, also survives him, as do 7 brothers-in-law (Ed, John, Denis, Ken, Ross, Tom and Jack),  6 sisters-in-law (Nancy, Donna, Donna, Pat, Lynn and Jennie), and 18 nieces and nephews.

He went to the Lord on May 16, 2025.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 21, from 3-7 p.m., at Raynor & D’Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville, NY.  A  Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Lawrence Church in Sayville, NY, on Thursday, May 22, at 10:00 a.m.   Interment of cremains in St. Lawrence Cemetery at a later date.
