Staff Sergent Alexander Peter Blandeburgo Sr passed away after a lengthy illness on December 29th, 2024, at the age of 85.
Alex was born on February 23rd, 1939, in Brooklyn NY to Peter and Crucificia Blandeburgo. After graduating HS, he enlisted as Private in the United States Army, and following Basic training was assigned to Company A, 728th Military Police Battalion in the Republic of Korea. After completing his enlistment as a Specialist E-4, returned to NY and began his 40-year Career with the US Postal Service.
In 1979, Alex decided to continue his military service and enlisted in the New York Army National Guard, serving in the Aviation Brigade 42nd Infantry Division where he reached the rank of Staff Sergent. SSG Blandeburgo served 20 years in the NY Army National guard for a total of 22 years in the United States Army. SSG Blandeburgo concluded his military service, retiring from the Army National Guard on February 2nd, 1999.
During his 40-year career with the United States Postal Service, Alex served in several roles, including Letter Carrier, Supervisor, Asst. Postmaster, Interim Postmaster and Retail Specialist.
After retiring from both the Army National Guard and the US Postal Service, SSG (Ret) Blandeburgo started his third career with the Unified Court system of New York State as a clerk with New York Family Court. He served in that role for the next 9 years retiring in 2011
Most importantly, SSG Blandeburgo married Anita Lucy Santangelo on July 16th 1961 and they shared their lives together for the next 63 years. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Alex was a servant leader throughout his life. His Faith and the Catholic Church were very important to him, serving as a eucharistic minister up until just a few months ago. He always placed family and friends first and would help a stranger in need without hesitation.
Alex is survived by his wife, Anita, his Children Alex Jr. and his wife Melinda, Peter, and Linda Kerensky and her husband William, his grandchildren Peter and his wife Christie, Sarah, Adam and his wife Nicole, Matthew and his wife Baylie, Michael, Leah, Abigail, and Susan Bittner and her husband Matthew, his great grandchildren Carter, Edwin and Domminic, and his sister Delores Marchand.
Family will receive visitors Tuesday, January 7th from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Raynor & D'Andrea Funeral home 683 Montauk Hwy. Bayport.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, January 8th at 10:45 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist RC Church 25 Ocean Avenue Center Moriches, NY 11934.
Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton.
