Thomas W. Hammond, born in Brooklyn 77 years ago, went home to heaven peacefully on December 14, 2018. He was home surrounded by family. Lovingly held dear by Mary Jane, his wife and best friend of 49 years, and his three daughters, Eileen (Bill) Cairney, Kerry (Anthony) Bruno and Beth (Darryl) Osojnak. He took extreme pride in his eight grandchildren: Erin, James, Lauren, Caitlin, Tommy, Colin, Keira and Joey. Tom also has three siblings: John (Angela) Hammond, Bobby (Patti) Hammond, Jane (Jim) Flaherty and his sister-in-law Frances Hammond. He also enjoyed the great fortune of having 22 nieces and nephews along with many cousins. Tom’s Aunt Sis, at 96, is the oldest living Hammond and was married to his favorite Uncle John Hannigan. He was predeceased by his brother William Hammond and his parents, Margaret and William Hammond.
Tom’s career path was chosen at a young age which was the NYC Fire Department. He truly loved it for over thirty years, with several heroic and meritorious acts to his credit, until retiring as a Captain in 1993. From early years as a young man coaching basketball to young boys, and then on to helping and serving the community, his calling was always service to others. His effervescent personality was obvious to all along with his contagious Irish wit.
