Ernest A. Kussmaul, 88, a resident of Sayville since 1941, died on April 28, 2018 at Southside Hospital with family. Born in the Bronx, “Ernie” graduated from Sayville High School. He went on to attend the Academy of Aeronautics and served in the US Army during the Korean War. Later, he received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from New York University. Mr. Kussmaul founded Kussmaul Electronics (originally, Kussmaul Engineering) in 1967 in a small room behind his garage. The company grew into a successful electronics manufacturing concern in West Sayville that Ernie operated for many years. He enjoyed boating, and in his 60s, learned to fly a plane. He was also an active member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sayville.
Mr. Kussmaul was devoted to his wife Marilyn, who predeceased him in 2016. He was also predeceased by his brother, Karl, in 1968. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Annette E. Kussmaul of Cambridge, Massachusetts and by his sister, Margaret I. Silverthorn of Bayport.
