Eleanor M. Hession Omans, a resident of Bayport, passed away on April 10, 2017, following a valiant battle against the long term effects multiple sclerosis. Born in Albany, and growing up in Schenectady New York, Eleanor graduated from Linton High School, but moved to Long Island in the early eighties. She completed her Bachelor Degree at SUNY Empire State College and as an activist and champion of social justice, she went on to earn her Master Degree in Social Work at SUNY Stony Brook. At the same time, she and her husband Stanley opened their home to provide foster care for countless kids, facilitating positive outcomes for families in crisis.

The eldest of the five Hession children, Eleanor was intelligent, witty and courageous, always advocating for those in need. With a strong voice, Eleanor sang and embraced the songs of her generation’s defiant women such as Joni Mitchell and Grace Slick. Like the rest of her family, Eleanor was an avid New York Met fan, was a life long learner, and read books voraciously.

She is survived by her husband Stanley; her children Jesse (Dezant) Hession Grayman, of New Zealand, Christopher Omans of Bayport, Katelyn Omans of Brazil, and Steven (Michelle) Omans, of Patchogue; her grandchildren, Fallon, Devon and Stephanie; and her siblings, Anne (Ronald) Smith of Mattituck, Sheila (Paul) Routh of West Sayville, Moira (John) Bilich of Sayville, and Patrick (Lisa) Hession of Blue Point. Eleanor is predeceased by her sons, Matthew and Kirk, her parents, Francis and Maryagnes Hession, and her brother Daniel Thomas.

A Funeral Mass will be held this Friday April 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snow R.C. Church, Blue Point. Cremation was private.  Arrangements entrusted to Raynor & d’Andrea Funeral Home.

Donations in Eleanor’s memory to Community Ambulance, 420 Lakeland Ave, Sayville, NY 11782 would be appreciated.
