Daniel P. Schmitt, 70, of Wilmington, NC and formerly of Long Island, NY passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2019. Dan was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 22, 1948 to Elizabeth and Karl Schmitt. A first generation American, Dan grew up in New York City and Nassau County, where his parents owned a series of delicatessens. He joined the United States Air Force in 1968 and served through 1972.
In lieu of flowers, contributions made in Dan's memory to, Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, 1208 S 3rd Street, Wilmington, North Carolina 28405, are appreciated by the family.
Dan married his first wife, Jane, in 1975, who preceded him in death and with whom he had two children, William Schmitt and Christine Aljadir. He then married Christine Stibbs in 1983, with whom he had one child, Jessica Schmitt. They lived in Sayville, New York until retirement, when they moved to coastal North Carolina.
Dan enjoyed golfing–taking as many shots as his playing partners would allow–and read vociferously, specifically every book published about the Civil War. Incredibly handy, he could fix anything and his holiday decorating efforts each year earned him the nickname of “Mr. Christmas.” He and Chris enjoyed spending time together, especially at the beach. Patient, humble and kind, Dan loved and was loved by so many, especially his family and loyal dog, George. He was an especially wonderful PopPop to his beloved four grandchildren, Aidan and Elizabeth Aljadir and Caroline and Henry Schmitt, who all adored him.
With his quick wit and a huge heart, Dan was liked by all who came across him and was a hero to his wife, three children and their spouses Dr. David Aljadir and Jenna Ellis Schmitt, his four grandchildren, along with his brother Richard and his niece and three nephews.
