Carol Ann Bennett Obituary

Carol Ann Bennett, 76, passed away at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home on October 26, 2019 with her loving family by her side. She was born in Brooklyn on March 8, 1943, to the late Wesley and Agnes McGowan. Carol graduated from St. Saviors High School in 1961 and received her RN in Nursing from the St Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1963. She worked at Southside Hospital and then at both the Sayville and West Islip Pediatric Offices until her retirement.

On June 26, 1965, Carol married Michael Joseph Bennett and they lived in Sayville, NY for 32 years before becoming “Snowbirds” and splitting their time between Waddington, NY and Barefoot Bay, Fl.

Carol and Mike were wanderers by nature, often taking family trips down the “blue highways” of America when the kids were young. As adults, the whole family traveled together frequently including many Caribbean sailing adventures. After retirement Carol and Mike traversed Ireland and Italy, railroaded across Canada, barged down the Rhine River and visited many other places in the world.

Well known to her friends was her intense passion for animals which led her to her adopting many homeless dogs including Mickey, Annie and Gypsy (who weren’t well behaved, didn’t like people with hats, and sometimes tried to bite the family) but she loved them all and gave them a wonderful home to spend their final years. She was an avid gardener and always had beautiful flowers around her houses.

Carol had a stroke on July 1, 2017 and was unable to recover completely. We are grateful to all her friends and family who visited her, called dad, or sent notes of encouragement, love and support. We are forever grateful to the St. Joseph’s Nursing Home staff who took care of her until her passing.

Carol is survived by her loving husband, Mike, and three children, Kelly (Chris) Anderson of East Hampton, NY, Michael (Meggin) Bennett of Sayville, NY, and Meghan (Gordon) Fetterly of Waddington, NY. “Grandma Love Muffin” adored her six grandchildren, Jake, Reghan, Grace, Calum, Maggie, and Lilly. Carol is also survived by her brother, Jack (Regina) McGowan of Manlius, NY, her two brothers in-law, Thomas (Mary) Bennett, Bryan (Theresa) Bennett, and eight nieces and nephews and many many friends who considered her as close as family.

Services will be at Raynor and D’Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville on Friday, November 1, 2019 from 4-7 pm. Her interment will be at Old St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waddington at a date that is yet to be determined. If you are unable to make the services, please plant a flower in your garden in mom’s memory.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Waddington Rescue at PO Box 331, Waddington, NY 13694 or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 532 Broadhollow Rd., Suite 118, Melville, NY 11747.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
