Springtime Fun with Kids and Grandkids

Published: April 12, 2023

Spring is a wonderful season to spend time outdoors with your family. With the weather warming up and nature coming back to life, there are plenty of activities to enjoy together. Whether you want to explore the great outdoors, engage in creative projects, or simply spend quality time together, here are some ideas for spring activities for parents and grandparents to do with kids.

1.   Go on a nature walk: Spring is the perfect season to explore nature with children. Take a walk through a local park or nature trail and look for signs of spring. Point out new buds on trees, listen for birds singing, and keep an eye out for blooming flowers. You can also collect items like leaves, twigs, and rocks to use in later crafts or projects.

2.   Plant a garden: Planting a garden is a fun and educational activity for children of all ages. You can start small with a few potted plants or go all out with a large garden plot. Teach your grandchildren about planting, watering, and caring for plants, and watch as they experience the joy of watching their plants grow. You can also incorporate a variety of herbs and vegetables into your garden and use them in later cooking projects.

3.   Make bird feeders: Springtime is a great time to attract birds to your backyard. Making bird feeders with kids is a fun and easy project that will provide hours of entertainment. You can use materials like pinecones, peanut butter, and birdseed to create unique and colorful feeders. Hang them outside and watch as birds flock to your backyard.

4.   Visit a farm or farmers’ market: Spring is a great time to visit a local farm or farmers’ market. You can teach kids about where their food comes from and support local agriculture. Many farms offer tours and activities like animal petting zoos, hayrides, and seasonal festivals. You can also use the fresh produce you find at the farmers market in later cooking projects.

5.   Have a picnic: Picnics are a fun and easy way to enjoy the outdoors with your children or grandchildren. Pack a basket with your favorite snacks and drinks and head to a local park or scenic area. You can also incorporate games like frisbee or a scavenger hunt to make the picnic even more fun.

6.   Take a bike ride: Springtime is a great season for cycling. Take your family on a bike ride through a local trail or park. You can also incorporate stops for ice cream or other treats along the way. Make sure to wear helmets and practice safe cycling habits.

7.   Attend a local event: Spring is a busy season for community events like festivals, parades, and fairs. Check your local calendar for upcoming events and take your family to experience the excitement. You can also look for events that cater specifically to children, like egg hunts or craft workshops.

8.   Go on a road trip: Springtime is a great season for exploring new places. Take a road trip with your family to a nearby destination like a national park or scenic area. You can also incorporate educational stops like museums or historical sites along the way.
