10 Ways to Keep Busy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Published: April 16, 2020

Feeling lost and unsure what to do with yourself in these uncertain times? You absolutely aren’t alone in feeling this way. It’s okay to veg out in front of the TV and relax as you try to adjust to the new normal, but as the days pass, you will find yourself wanting to engage in more productive activities. We are here to help you discover ways that you keep busy and have compiled some ideas that can start you on your way.

Get Organized!

With all this time on your hands, it is a great opportunity to tackle your overflowing junk drawer or messy closet. Sort through your items, putting aside items you’d like to donate when the pandemic is over. Get rid of the clothes you haven’t worn in years, decluttering can help alleviate some stress, something we could all use right now!

Document Your Experience

Right now, we are all living through history. Why not start a journal to keep track of what your life is like during the pandemic? Whether it be a paper journal, a photo journal, or an online account, it will be interesting to look back at your ordeal during this time. It is also a great idea to show your children and grandchildren what you experienced.

Stay Active

While we have the ability to do so, and the time to do it, it’s important to keep your body moving. You don’t need a gym to exercise - workouts can be done at home. Whether you find an indoor workout online, dust off some hand weights, or go for a walk (while maintaining social distance!), physical activity can help you keep up your spirits, stay healthy, and remain agile.

Puzzle Time

With this abundance of free time on your hands, why not do some jigsaw puzzles? It’s a great way to keep your mind healthy and spend some quality time with those you are quarantined with. If you don’t have many jigsaw puzzles, or you’ve made your way through them; find some crossword or word search puzzles you can complete online or print out.

Remain Connected while Staying Apart

During this monumental time of social distancing, we will all find ourselves missing our dear family and friends. Thanks to technology, we can still find incredible ways to connect with one another. With our computers, tablets and smartphones there are wonderful programs and websites that can connect you in real time to family and friends, so that you can video chat with one another. In such a stressful time, that can make you feel isolated, it’s really important to stay united with those we care about.

Educate Yourself

Have you wanted to learn a new skill? The internet is full of resources to help you learn anything under the sun. YouTube has tutorials for really anything you’re interested in learning. There are also free online courses you can take in different subjects. Apps to download, such a DuoLingo can help you learn a new language. During this time, a lot of libraries are offering resources that can help you discover new things.

Get Cooking!

Now is the perfect time to get busy in the kitchen. Whether it be an old favorite that brings you comfort, or a new recipe you’ve been wanting to try, cooking or baking will be a productive and yummy thing to do.

Self Care

With all of the stress and anxiety you may be feeling while navigating this difficult time, taking care of yourself may fall to the wayside. It is important to take care of yourself. Take a bubble bath and relax, try a new face mask, get enough sleep, whatever you need to do to feel some inner peace.

Read!

Whether it be an online book, an audio book or a physical book, reading is a great way to pass the time and keep your mind active. Even reading something as simple as an online article or blog is a great way to occupy yourself.

Start a Craft Project

We all have a project we’ve been wanting to start, a new craft we’ve wanted to learn, or an ongoing project to continue. What better time than now? You can order crafting supplies online and find YouTube tutorials on how to do just about any craft. Crochet a beautiful blanket, knit a pretty scarf, try your hand at scrap booking, or even whittle a new creation out of wood, really, the possibilities are endless.
