Organizing For Spring

Published: April 30, 2024

Spring cleaning is synonymous with this time of year – shake out those rugs and wipe clean those windows! But spring organizing is just as important as refreshing your home and making your living spaces shine. A well-organized home will be more functional and less cluttered.  We’ll start with this timeless tip: One good way to determine whether to keep or give something away is the 3-month test. If you haven’t used something in the past 3 months, you probably don’t need it.

Here are five more tips for organizing your home this spring:

Organize your closets: The first task to tackle is organizing your closets, especially if you live in a place where the seasons change drastically between winter and spring. The first step is to remove all your winter clothes and coats and replace them with your spring clothes and coats. It’s best to store clothes in plastic bins with sealable lids to protect them from bugs and dust. Look at every single item and decide whether to keep it or donate it as you’re switching your clothes. Now is a good time to eliminate clothes that no longer fit, you no longer like, or are out of style.

Clean out your entryway: Clear out any lingering winter boots, coats, scarves, and mittens. Store them safely away for next winter. Throw out any stacks of mail, newspapers, or anything else that doesn't belong or is no longer needed. Then add enough hooks, shelves, and baskets to hold all your belongings when you come in the door. Consider placing a drawer organizer in the desk or drawer near your entrance to keep small items organized. Additionally, you may want to keep a recycling bin nearby to easily dispose of any junk mail.

Sort out the Laundry Room: To make some space in the laundry area, you can recycle old, empty containers, and throw away empty laundry product containers.  Organize the laundry containers you use on a tray or in a bin. This not only adds an aesthetic appeal but also simplifies the cleaning process. A triple-sorter laundry basket will help avoid the pileup on the laundry room floor. Giving each family member their own basket will keep clothes separated, making it easier to sort on laundry days.

Cut Linen Closet Clutter: You may have been accumulating bedding and towels for years without getting rid of old sets, crowding your closet with more than you need. Generally, two to three sets of sheets per bed and two sets of towels per person are enough, plus an additional set for guests. Choose the best sets and donate the rest. If your old linens are worn out, consider dropping them in a textile recycling bin instead of throwing them in the trash. To keep things neat, use shelf dividers to keep piles of towels and sheets from toppling over, and store small items inside labeled storage boxes.

Tidy up the Bathroom: Unused products that we may have tried, but don't like, are often the cause of bathroom clutter. These unused items end up getting shoved to the back of the cupboard or linger in the shower, where they take up precious space. Sort through your bath and beauty products. Toss out everything you don’t use and if possible, recycle the containers. Once everything is cleared out, find a few baskets or trays to keep the products you use daily neatly organized. Do the same for the medicine cabinet – toss any outdated medication or products, but be sure to dispose of medications safely. You may want to move prescriptions and over-the-counter medications to a different location as the humidity in a bathroom can be damaging. Choose a place that is cool, dry, and out of reach of children.

Once you have this spring organization out of the way, you can enjoy the warm sunshine, spring flowers, and fun family time!
