Helen R. Maloney

Helen R. Maloney of Oakdale passed away quietly in her home on August 5, 2017.  She was 87.  Born on March 12, 1930 in Mineola , New York, to Alfred and Helen Noon Guarnieri. 

Helen grew up in Hempstead New York, graduated from Hempstead High school in 1947 and Scudder Secretarial College in 1949.  She married James Maloney in 1950.  After starting her family in Hempstead they moved to Oakdale in 1961.

For 30 years, Helen was the Administrative Secretary for the Sayville Congregational United Church of Christ from July 1966 to August 1995.  She worked for the Connetquot Central School District of Islip in a number of positions:  District Treasurer  1998 – 2000,  Chairman/Assistant Clerk Election District #3 1998 -2012 , Claims Auditor-Connetquot School District  July 2000 –2017.  She was also the Internal Claims Auditor Section XI Athletic Association  2006 – 2012.

Her community involvement was extensive.  She was active with the Girl Scouts from 1964- 1973 and president of Girl Scout Camp Edey in Bayport 1967-1968. She was a Charter member of Connetquot YDC (Youth Development Corporation) 1976-1990 and served as Treasure, Vice-President and President.  She was a member of the Ronkonkoma- Bohemia- Oakdale Salvation Army unit from 1980-2005.  She was a member of Oakdale Chamber of Commerce and served as President, Vice-President, Secretary and school liaison.  She was a member of Town of Islip Youth Board 1991-2013.

Her public school involvement lasted 56 years, 1961-2017.   She was a member of various Connetquot Parent Teacher Associations, serving as President, Secretary, Treasurer, Council delegate, and Legislation Chairman.  1969-1978 she was member of Connetquot School District Budget Advisory Committee, served as Chair person 6 years.  1978-85 and 1988-91 while a member of Connetquot School District Board of Education, Helen served as President and Vice-President 1980-2015, was a member and served as Executive Secretary of R.E.F.I.T (Reform Educational Financing Inequities Today) Board of Directors.  From 1984-1985 she was a member of Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association Executive Committee and Legislative Committee.  Helen served as President of Reactivated Islip Town School Boards Association 1989-1991.  she was Assistant Director, Associate Director and Treasurer of Suffolk District PTA 1993-2002.  From 2002-2015 she was the Executive Assignee Suffolk Region PTA to Long Island Educators Council (LIEC).

Mrs. Maloney was predeceased by her husband James Maloney in 2007.  She is survived her son James Maloney, daughter-in-law Janet Hughes, daughter Susan Stokke, son-in-law Wayne Stokke, granddaughter Jennifer Stokke Nyfennegger, grandson-in-law Thomas Nyfennegger and granddaughter Jacqueline Maloney.

Funeral Services will be on Monday August 7 from 4-8 at Raynor & D'Andrea Funeral Home 245 Main St. West Sayville, NY 11796.

Chapel Service Monday evening 7:30 p.m. at the funeral Home.
